Types of Bets: Singles, Parlays, and More

Sportsbooks offer dozens of bet types. Most of your long term results will come from a handful of them. Here is what each one is and when it is actually worth using.
Straight bets
A single wager on one outcome: a moneyline, a spread, or a total. These carry the lowest built in margin and should make up the bulk of your betting. Everything else is a variation.
Parlays
A parlay combines multiple bets into one wager. Every leg has to win. The payouts are large and the math is unforgiving, because the sportsbook margin compounds with each leg you add.
A three team parlay at -110 per leg pays around 6 to 1, but the fair price is closer to 7 to 1. That gap is the house edge, and it grows with every leg.
Parlays are entertainment. If you play them, size them as entertainment.
Teasers
A teaser lets you move the spread in your favor across multiple games in exchange for a lower payout. In football, moving through the key numbers of 3 and 7 can genuinely be profitable, which makes teasers one of the few multi leg bets with a real strategic case.
Player props
Props are bets on individual performance rather than game outcome. Passing yards, rebounds, strikeouts, and so on.
Prop markets have lower betting limits and get less attention from sportsbooks, which means the numbers are softer. If you specialize, this is often where the best edges are found.
Futures
A long term bet on a season outcome such as a championship winner. Futures tie up your money for months and carry a high margin, but they let you act on an opinion long before the market catches up.
Live betting
Betting in game, with odds updating in real time. The pace favors the sportsbook, and impulse decisions are expensive. The value is in having a plan before the game starts, for example knowing you want a team if they fall behind early.
Where to focus
Straight bets and props are where disciplined bettors make their money. Teasers have a narrow, specific use in football. Parlays, futures, and live betting are best treated as small parts of your overall action rather than the foundation.
