Bankroll Management for Long-Term Success

July 25, 2026 ยท 2 min read

You can pick winners at a profitable rate and still go broke. Bankroll management is what stands between a good handicapper and a busted account.

Set a real bankroll

Your bankroll is money set aside specifically for betting. It is not rent money, and it is not money you need for anything else. Keeping it separate makes every decision that follows easier.

Use flat betting

Flat betting means risking the same amount on every play, typically 1 to 2 percent of your bankroll. One unit, every time.

It sounds boring, and that is the point. Flat betting removes the emotional decisions that wreck bankrolls. You are not betting more because you feel good about a game or less because you lost yesterday.

If you want to vary your sizing, cap it. Most disciplined bettors work within a 1 to 3 unit range and reserve the top end for genuinely rare spots.

Understand variance

Even at a strong 57 percent win rate, losing streaks of six or seven bets are completely normal. They are not evidence that you have lost your edge. They are math.

This is why bet sizing matters so much. At 1 percent per bet, a seven game losing streak costs you 7 percent of your bankroll and you carry on. At 10 percent per bet, the same streak takes more than half your account and your judgment is compromised for weeks after.

Rules that protect you

  • Never chase. Bet sizes should never increase because of prior losses.
  • Cap your daily exposure. Decide in advance how many units you are willing to risk in a day.
  • Avoid parlays as a core strategy. The payouts look great and the long term math does not.
  • Withdraw profits periodically. Booking wins makes the whole exercise real.

Track everything

Record every bet: the date, the sport, the line you got, the stake in units, and the result. After a few hundred bets you will see patterns you never would have guessed. Most bettors discover they are strong in one or two specific areas and quietly losing money everywhere else.

You cannot fix what you do not measure. Bankroll management is not the exciting part of betting, but it is the part that decides who is still here next season.
