Sports betting looks complicated from the outside. Different numbers, different bet types, and a lot of people talking very confidently. The good news is that the fundamentals are simple, and once they click, everything else starts to make sense.
Start with the three main bets
Almost every wager you will see falls into one of three buckets:
- Moneyline. You pick who wins. That is it. The price changes based on how likely each side is to win.
- Spread. The favorite gives points and the underdog gets points. A team favored by 6.5 has to win by 7 or more for the bet to cash.
- Total (over/under). You bet on the combined score of both teams, not on who wins.
Learn to read the odds
American odds are built around 100. A minus number tells you how much you need to risk to win 100. A plus number tells you how much you win if you risk 100.
So at -150 you risk 150 to win 100. At +150 you risk 100 to win 150. The bigger the minus number, the bigger the favorite.
Those numbers also imply a win probability. A -150 favorite is being priced at roughly a 60 percent chance to win. That matters, because your job as a bettor is to find spots where you think the real chance is better than the price suggests.
Bet in units, not dollars
A unit is simply a fixed percentage of your bankroll, usually 1 percent. If your bankroll is 1,000 dollars, one unit is 10 dollars.
Thinking in units does two things. It keeps your bet sizes consistent, and it lets you measure results honestly. A bettor up 20 units had a great season whether they were betting 10 dollars a unit or 1,000.
Understand the vig
Most standard bets are priced at -110 on both sides. That extra 10 is the sportsbook fee, known as the vig or juice. It is why breaking even is not 50 percent. You need to win about 52.4 percent of your -110 bets just to stay level.
This single fact explains why discipline matters so much. Small edges compound, and small leaks do too.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Chasing losses. Doubling your bet size after a loss is the fastest way to wipe out a bankroll.
- Betting every game. Volume is not an edge. Selectivity is.
- Betting with your heart. Your favorite team is the hardest team to handicap objectively.
- Ignoring the closing line. If you consistently beat the number the game closes at, you are doing something right.
What to do next
Pick one sport. Track every bet you make, including the line you got. Bet small while you learn. Give yourself a few months before judging your results, because short term swings tell you almost nothing.
The bettors who last are not the ones who win big once. They are the ones who stay disciplined long enough for a real edge to show up in the numbers.
